My Lessons Learned for Having BBQs

Thursday, September 3rd, 2009

Here are a few lessons learned from a recent BBQ I had:

- Buy ice – for the cooler to get the drinks/beers cold
- Bring out a separate garbage can for garbage and one recyclables
- Bring the condiments out to earlier from the fridge and put it where the guests are eating (just like at the restaurant)
- Bring the steaks out of the fridge (1/2 hour to 1 hour) before cooking (otherwise the inside will take too long to cook and the outside gets overcooked)
- Use the citronella to keep the bugs away
- Marinade the meats the night before – otherwise there is no taste
- Cook some of the meats ahead of time that takes a long time (eg. Chicken wings, and corn).  Cook it briefly when the guests have arrived

What to keep in your wallet in case of little emergencies?

Monday, July 13th, 2009

What do you keep in your wallet that’s really important?  Well, the obvious answers that people tend to come across include money, identification, credit cards etc.  What I’m talking about is the things aside from the obvious.

One of the things I find incredibly useful is to carry 2 unopened bandaids in my wallet at all times.  Your friends and family can find it helpful too and they will be really grateful if you happen to have one in a case of emergency.  I’ve encountered numerous situations where a bandaid has proven helpful.

One time it came in really handy was when I went fishing with a few friends.  We were all in a boat and it happened that one of my friends landed a fish and was attempting to remove the hook from the fish’s mouth.  Well, this fish was particularly finnicky and just so happened to twist during the moment my friend was trying to remove the hook from its mouth.  This unfortunate twist caused the hook to inadvertently pierce my friend’s finger causing it to bleed.  We unfortunately did not have  a first aid kit readily available on the boat so my friend had to do the best he could by rinsing his bleeding finger in the lake water (I know, not the most sanitary).  Well, this was the precise moment where I remembered that I had a couple unopened bandages that I keep in my wallet at all times.  I produced the bandaid to my friend, which needless to say was very grateful because it helped to keep wound clean from additional expsure to germs.

Another occasion where a bandaid came in handy was when I was helping my brother fix up my house at a construction site.  In a simlar way, my brother cut his hand hammering a nail by accidently hammering down on his finger which caused it to bleed.  Again, no first aid kit readily available since it was an unoccupied home at the time.  This time, there was running water at least to run his cut clean.  Again my trusty supply of bandaids that I regularly keep in my wallet helped to save the day since we had to continue with the work at the house and did not want to really stop to go out to look for bandage supplies.

Key Actions:  To summarize, keep a couple of bandages in your wallet because you will just never know when you happen to need one.  They don’t take up too much space and you’ll be really glad you have it available if you ever need one.

A new beginning...My name is Fred King.  Welcome to my blog.  I work as an Architect for a major financial institution in North America.  Throughout my career, I’ve led a variety of projects and teams and have learned a few things about what works and what doesn’t.
With Effective Living Tips, I will be researching, investigating and documenting the ways in which we live and work most effectively.  This blog will serve 2 goals.  First, it will help me to document the best practices that I have come across for living and working effectively.   Second, this blog will hopefully be of use to other people (like you) who can assist me by providing feedback to what you think.
So, I hope you visit back often and/or subscribe to my feed.
